Our First Summer Adventure: Strawberry Picking
For the past… 6 years I’ve had a best of intentions during summer: to make this summer the best of Jack’s life. I’ve day dreamed amazing adventures and made plans about all the fun things to do here in Louisville. I’ve done the internet research on the best types of hiking boots, sunscreen, and day trips. But unfortunately, I’ve never followed through on these summer plans. Sure, I’ve started out with the best of intentions, but somehow plans just fizzle out and we are back to iPads and the pool. Not this year! This year I’m going to do it: each week an amazing new adventure for Jack and I to go on! I have a list of amazing places I’ve wanted to visit and even included some options for rainy days.
Our first adventure was strawberry picking, something I haven’t done since I was a kid. I decided to go to Gallrein Farms because they have lots of amazing you pick areas, like strawberries, apples, and pumpkins. We go there every year in the fall to have a fun hay ride out to the pumpkin patch and pick our own pumpkin. But this day was about strawberry. I brought some good friends along, too.
The kids had a great time running around the strawberry fields trying to pick the reddest one or the biggest one. I have a black thumb and can’t really grow much. Strawberry picking was a good lesson for the kids on where our food comes from. They also had a petting zoo with some cute goats, lambs, and some chickens that peck. My favorite part was lunch! Their deli is open weekdays from 11-2. I got a turkey, cheddar, and apple panini and it was one of the best sandwiches I’d ever had. They have good children’t options, too. The grocery/nursery is open business hours daily.
I’d have to say our first adventure was a success. I have home with a bushel of strawberries, and I’m not going to lie I got some donuts, too. Jack came home with some amazing memories with good friends. I’d love it if you’d leave a comment with your experiences fruit picking, or of Gallrein farm, or if you have some suggestions for things we ought to try. Please, follow along every week with our new adventures!
