Did you know that the Speed Art Museum has free admission days? Neither did I until last week. Not that admission is very expensive, but it did make a nice excuse to take Jack to see some art. He’s a very tactile child, so the first thing I did was explain to him that we were not allowed to touch the exhibits because of the oils on our fingers, age of the piece, etc. At every exhibit he asked me if he was allowed to touch them. Lets just say he was super disappointed that the only thing he was allowed to touch were the benches. He enjoyed the landscape and abstract paintings the most. My favorite art is impressionist, and the museum have an original Monet’s there. I also really enjoy Dutch still life paintings.
Then we went to the basement and found the Art Sparks area. He absolutely loved every thing in that room! In fact, we shut the place down because he didn’t want to leave. There are all kinds of areas where children can experiment with color, light, texture, symmetry, even emotion. I think his favorite part was a room where you could dance and it would show your moves on a big screen set to different light and colors. He was so happy he talked about how much fun he had the whole way home!
So, Speed Art Museum gets an enthusiastic 4 thumbs up from us! If you are members of the library, this summer’s cultural pass that includes free admission the art museum as well as many other amazing venues around town is available now.
