When to Schedule Family Portraits
One question that comes up quite a bit from my clients is: “how often should I schedule family portraits?” In fact, it comes up so much I made a little info graph that could be easily shared. But I’d also like to do a deep dive in this post to discuss this question.
Babies are such an amazing blessing! They grow and reach a new milestone almost every day, especially when they are small. I include a maternity session with my newborn session, as well. Its really important to document that time being pregnant, growing a life and changing your family. Your newborn portraits should be scheduled during the first ten days as long as baby is healthy. I’ve often had parents come in two weeks after for their ordering session and their baby looks totally different. Every major milestone, such as sitting, crawling or standing should be photographed. My first year baby plan includes a sitting, and standing session to cover these milestones, and a family session for you first new family portrait! Babies should be photographed at least every 6 month until their second birthday. Some parents even like a session once a month for the first 18 months.
Toddler through school-aged
Children this age always amaze me with their stories, jokes, and silly games they love to play. I love my one-on-one time with each of them during family sessions and always learn something new. Having portraits sessions once a year during this time will really capture their childhood spirit and highlight their growth and maturity. But you could still continue with the every 6 month schedule until they start kindergarten.
Tweens to Teens
Just because a teen isn’t grown as much as they did in childhood doesn’t mean their life shouldn’t still be documented with family pictures. I recommend no less than every two years during this time to emphasize their personality.
High School Senior
Each graduating senior should have at least one portrait session between the spring of their junior year and graduation. Some people even like to have one for every season (even though I’m not a fan of winters here in Louisville). This will probably be the last portrait you have of your child until their wedding day, so I also recommend a family portrait during this year, too.
Once your children are all grown up and out of the house, doesn’t mean you have to stop taking photos! In fact, these can be the best time for family pictures. Each time you add a new member through marriage or birth/adoption or have an amazing life alteration is another reason to schedule a portrait, not to mention, a promotion, retirement, or special anniversary. I love when I have the opportunity to do multi-generation portraits.
If its been a while since you’ve had a portrait I’d love for you to contact me so we can start planning your session!
