Body Image Awareness Month
For the shortest month of the year February celebrates some pretty big things. To name a few: black history, national heart association, and body image awareness. I think its no secret that I’ve had a lot of body confidence issues since being diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. If I am honest with myself, I’ve had these issues since I was a young girl. After doing some research I found that 53% of 13 year old girls are unhappy with their bodies, 30% are actively dieting, and over 50% of teenage girls use unhealthy methods of weight control. Seeing these statistics really showed me that this problem hasn’t gotten any better in twenty years. I want to be able to use my talents as a child photographer to help other girls who might be feeling the way I have most of my life.
But why body confidence has gotten so low? A lot of it has to do with have much media we view. Media: tv, movies, commercials, magazines, you tube, social media, is available every second of the day. And media is showing us images of women with unrealistic body images. Most of these images have been manipulated by someone like me who knows how to make photoshop magic. Its not just images, but girls can also learn how to diet in chat rooms and Pinterest articles or be bully in their social media accounts.
Boost your child’s self esteem
There are some things you can do to counteract negative media influences:
- Keep TV out of bedrooms.
- Don’t watch TV during meal times.
- Be aware of what internet sites your child visits.
- Teach your children to be critical of media, like photoshop manipulations.
- Model healthy behaviors.
- Offset the negative images with positive experiences like a portrait session with an experienced child photographer, like me! According to this article, children’s self esteem was boosted 37% when they regularly saw images of themselves. Your child’s self esteem is boosted every time they pass by their portrait.
Celebrate positive body images by booking a portrait for you child, or one for yourself or family. Contact me and we can talk about how we can make you and your children feel great about their bodies with an in-person consultation.
