I’m so excited to share another business spotlight today! This week: The New Blak. And if you’ve never heard of it, you need to visit their store right now in Oxmoor Mall. But what’s so amazing about this brand? Their owner and head seamstress created the New Blak as an alternative to throw away fashion that uses synthetic fabrics and unethical manufacturing processes. She wanted her company to use sustainable fabrics, like bamboo and organic cotton, from ethical fabric manufacturers. All the dresses are made in their studio inside their store by local seamstresses. They even reuse their scrap fabrics in other garments, like a really beautiful patchwork vest that I currently own. Each dress is unique and they can even alter it for you right in the store. I can’t even tell you how amazingly soft the bamboo fabric feels, and its super forgiving when you wear it.
Another amazing thing the New Black does is use real life customers as models for their clothing. I had the honor of photographing some of these amazing women last fall. The maroon really pops against the fall backdrop in all of these images. I also really loved working with Jordan, one of the managers who also has her own blog, a state of ruin. She’s always searching for ethical and sustainable products in everyday life.
Two thumbs way, way up for The New Blak, I highly recommend that you go over to Oxmoor mall and check it out! The store also features jewelry and art from local artists. I got my step-daughters some really cute earring there right before Christmas last year.
I own this dress and I can’t even describe how amazing it is. First the bamboo fabric is so comfortable! And its super forgiving for any body shape. Its also very easy to dress up with a scarf, cardigan or jewelry or wear it casual with a denim jacket.
