5 tips for Amazing Family Pictures
Guys, its my favorite time of the year: family picture season!! I want everyone to have the best experience possible, so I decided to come up with some tips to have the best family pictures!
If you’re afraid you might have some negative nellies in your crew, I’ve got a tip for you: treat family pictures as if you were going on vacation. We went to Disney world for Jack’s birthday a few years ago. I spent a lot of time planning that trip to be as perfect as possible, but I wasn’t sure how Jack would react to the travel or the hustle and bustle of Disney. So, about a year before our trip I started talking it up. Every time we would watch a Disney movie I would make a big fuss about the castle logo. Look at the big castle, that’s at Disney world. Then I would say his favorite characters live there and how we could ride a train and eat all kid of cake and ice cream. My strategy did the trick! He had an amazing birthday and we had a great trip (he still makes a fuss over the castle logo in the beginning of movies.)
Treat your family pictures like a vacation. Talk it up, make it exciting, add some bonus bribes like eating at their favorite restaurant after or ice cream. If you go into it with a good attitude, they will, too!
This is, by far, the most difficult choice for my clients. But the rules are actually pretty simply: coordinate NOT match and layers. The family featured in these images has done a great job with these rules. Everyone is in the same color family, but not matching. Each person has their own style. Layers add dimension and variety, plus its practical when its so cold outside! I have a Pinterest boards dedicated to wardrobe choice. Check it out and get inspired. Or create your own and share it with me!
Everyone wants to be outdoors for family pictures in the fall! And I love it, too. The crisp breeze and amazing colors make fall one of the best times of the year to be outdoors. I have a lot of amazing sessions locations, like this one, and if you’d like to talk about the best place for your fall pictures contact me for a consultation!
Once you have your location and wardrobe decided everything is set for amazing family pictures, right? Well, almost. I think the most important tip I had give you is to plan ahead. One of my favorite phrases: boogies happen. Snot happens, spilled juice happens, stubbed toes and grumpies happen, too. Planning ahead for these little occurrences can make sessions go smoother. So, if you have young littles bring an extra outfit (or two) incase of spit up or spills. Wipes, small candies for bribes, and little lovies (favorite stuffed animal or toy) are great things to plan on bringing to prevent a lot of childhood catastrophes. And don’t discount bribes for older children (or husbands), too. Jack will do just about anything for more youtube time and I use that to my full advantage! I always tell my clients to plan on arriving about 15 minutes early, that way if you’re running a little late you still get there on time!
I think the most important tip to remember during family pictures is to have fun! Pictures shouldn’t be stressful or hectic. They should be an amazing time hanging out with your favorite people creating memories. At least thats what I love about them. And since you followed my tips everyone is excited about pictures, you’ve planned ahead for the little things, picked out an amazing wardrobe and location there is nothing to worry about! Now HAVE FUN!!
